1992-06-22 - Monday - one to the Far East and one to the School

(In the) morning (at the College), there was a send-off for Anil Kumar Sir, Principal, going on Swami's mission to the Far East - Japan, Hong Kong, Bangkok. Still no Chem practicals - only talk.

Though I didn't have a number (for the lots taken to go for darshan), I could sit in the front hall of Trayee as I went last. Swami talked of the body, how foul it is. I was feeling sleepy. Swami called (School principal) Habbu sir, he said teacher needed, Bioscience, Swami called a boy - Satish Babu (sir now) - A grade - told him to go (and join as faculty at the school).

Got A3* phone. Saw inside of computer room when went to call someone for phone. Tidied cupboard.

*A3 - In those years, I would write my letters home addressed to A3 - Achan, Amma, Anch. And in those years before mobile phones and before telephones were kept in each room in the Hostels, the process of talking to faimily members on the phone was somewhat laborious. If they called us, it would need to be during a particular time window - after study hours and before lights out, or something like that. One of the students 'doing phone duty' would take down the name, class, room number of the student, and would pass on the message that he has a phone call. We would then go and wait near the office, till they call back 10 minutes later. If we had to call them, it would need to be from an STD booth located near the entrance of the Western Canteen of those days. Since this was in a different building, umbrellas would be needed when it rained at Brindavan, which was often. It used to be quite cool - cold to those coming from hot Telugu locales! - in Brindavan in those days, especially after sundown, at night in the corridors and so on. Sweaters were de rigueur.
