1996-07-04 - Thursday - UNIX - found C shell interpreter was not working. Indrajith (MTech student with work experience, who was familiar with UNIX systems) also couldn't find out what's wrong. Vishwanath Sir starting Stat. Phy. ensemble theory.
Moral class - Prof. Sampath (former 3rd VC of SSSIHL) - many Kodai stories. Swami told him, (he was) "Lakshmana, Saraf (2nd VC of SSSIHL) was Rama, but Rama went to Delhi!" Later, Hanumanthappa (4th VC of SSSIHL) was Lakshmana, he was Rama, but Lakshmana preferred to rule alone! Now, didn't say anything for G.V. (5th VC of SSSIHL).
1996-07-05 - Friday - "Pseudo heterodyning" - frustrating as could get only π phase change. Used signal analyzer to acquire data. S4 again seminars on 902...
Timetable again reverting to old schedule, 9 to 3, from Monday.
1996-07-06 - Saturday - Matlab whole day. "Presentation of progress in Hardware project" 10.55 to 11.50. Headache - dehydration, hypoglycaemia or output probs? Shailesh Sir shed light on heterodyning problem - with HWP, naturally only π shift!
Room altar - T.T. Sunil taken up, assigned work also! (meaning that one of our roommates had taken it upon himself to organize building of the room altar, and he had assigned tasks to all of us, too.)
1996-07-07 - Sunday - Sampath (one year junior to me) wanted QM explanation, so I didn't go to lab ⇒ slept as he didn't turn up!
Mandir - morning winding up after music as Dr KBR goes to college just ahead of Swami…
A.T.P. waiting - and You're going to college.
After evening program, told Sudhir Bhaskar Sir to distribute something (for ATP?). Shailesh Sir padanamaskar (for research? Primary School?) Dr. KVR said yesterday he's going to Primary (School to teach the XII students, as the teachers there asked You for help with teaching.)
Idea of writing diary in diary, discourse in "Swami" notebook, during discourse itself… (But unfortunately, I could not locate this "Swami" notebook now, 30 years later.)
1996-07-08 - Monday - 2nd mumps case in our room – K. Chandrasekhar, after Jaganmohan. Migrated to C-11...
Altar work started - study hours! 4-5 boys cutting thermocol. PAM Dirac memorial volume - some good stories.
Optics exp! The polarizer is causing arbitrary shift in fringes! Therefore, random results.
1996-07-09 - Tuesday - Dr. KVR took 1 hr & rest talk! Shailesh Sir still in Bangalore ⇒ no class. Practicals - just told & discussed the problem with Vishwanath Sir.
Articles on noticeboard getting sluggish.
Evening Vivek Babu locked in lab (power had failed) ⇒ phone calls etc! 2 rescue parties! Myself & Ravinder.
1996-07-10 - Wednesday - On Sunday, had bought water-soluble OHP markers - the permanent ones are rapidly getting exhausted.
School car is petrol! It's a rebored Ambassador, 1971 model, WBJ 7305 (Shailesh Sir's). S2-3 - finally started Lasers with intro to subject & zoom. Dr. KVR says he'll finish his portion before Midsem!
1996-07-11 - Thursday - Called A² (simply - call booth was free).
Habbu Sir spoke & R. Mahalingam gave an impromptu "Vote of thanks" - v. good - "Swami quotes Ramakrishna and not Vivekananda as teacher is more important. Our good fortune to have such teachers as Prof. Habbu..."
Altar evaluation - our altar pieces got ready by ~8.50, assembled ~9 pm, one minute before S⁴, Rangarajan Sir, Sandipan Sir, Anil Kumar Sir came. Latter got a shock as at 8 o'clock there was nothing!
DSN also fever, along with Shyama.
1996-07-12 - Friday - Finally exp scrapped. G.V. went to basement, told to clean - (Prof. upset) morning full. Afternoon KVR & S⁴ didn't take ⇒ Matlab.
1996-07-13 - Saturday - Morning G.V. (the Vice-Chancellor, was coming) to lab ⇒ 7.45 - cleaning up. Srini & I in Comp. lab. typing Bourne shell prog. Afternoon getting printout of '96 Summer Course discourse summaries. Evening CBSE Director came ⇒ You came out early! Virtual summary of previous discourses!
Shailesh Sir - class evening (when I met him after dinner). Vishwanath Sir class Monday - came to Hostel to get Sikka Sir's notes, afternoon had phoned.
