5 AM - switched on SRH (Sai Ramesh Hall) lights. Learnt Nandagopal Sir was supposed to do, mains had tripped. I was late for SRH - Swami was near the gate when I reached! Was assisting Vishnu in making altar - Sarva dharma symbol. Great enthusiasm.
In those years, there used to be an "altar competition" among the rooms of the Hostel - later this idea went to Prasanthi Nilayam also - and Swami would see all the altars at the end with each room's students gathered around their respective altar, and take pictures with each altar. This picture below, from my 'Swami albums', is from the altar competition of 1992-'93, I believe. Or maybe 1993-'94.
Discourse notes -
"I am as near you as you are near Me". Only Chittashuddhi is required. Story of cowherd to whose whim Vishnu had to return with 'extra fittings'. How long will you keep body feeling? If one could take a fistful of mud while going, there would've been a ration of mud also in India. No satisfaction, except with God. Example, Meru mountain - satisfied one doesn't want, for dissatisfied one, it is not enough. After you have essentials to live, turn desires to God. Satisfaction only then. Part-time devotees - when desires not satisfied, throw away photo. Do sin, expect fulfilment? If no faith, even a cow, even a monkey can frighten you.
----
Argument drained Vishnu of enthusiasm, so he went to see "Mother India" (being shown in the Hostel dining hall after dinner) leaving altar work. I read "Much Obliged, Jeeves" as no mood to study.
