Summary of Discourses given by Swami to students from Kodaikanal, Apr-May 1991, delivered at the school assembly by Sri Sai Surendranath.

Samskruthi

  • What is Samskruthi?
    When the husk is removed from paddy, we get rice. We can store rice, its value is 10x higher than that of paddy. Parinaama is Samskruthi.
    Cotton - converted to thread and then cloth
    Gold - impurities are removed, ornament is made
    Watch - a piece of metal is transformed into a watch
    Man - when good qualities dominate, we say he has good samskaaraas. Weed out the bad like removing thorns for growing paddy.

  • Culture is the same everywhere. Eg. In India, we cook and eat food. In the West also, they cook and eat food. But the taste is different.

  • God's creation has dualism. Only one who knows will see all as One. Ordinary man - two horse race. Sage - only one horse. Therefore, sage sees only One, weeds out bad.

  • Modern education - ignorance. Student went to sage - ladies and gents were seated separately. Student thinks others are ignorant. Asked the sage, why discriminate, no difference between ladies and gents. The sage said, there is a difference between ladies and gents because there is a difference between ladies and ladies also - will you fall at the feet of servant tomorrow instead of your mother?

  • If child does not grow, it leads to anxiety. So, people want change. But do not realize that lifespan is reducing day by day. Both sides of the same coin. Prakruthi drishti - worldly vision. The Yogi realizes - must do something to go towards God.

  • Sugarcane - if it does not undergo change, will become dry. By samskruthi, (refinement), can make it permanent (sugar).

  • Chirashti - immovable, permanent, Aadhaaram.
    Charashti - movable, impermanent, Aadheyam.
    Individual - become one by grinding.
    Ladies grind rice to flour. Rotating stone == charashti. Stationary stone == chirashti.
    Road is stationary, car moves. If both move, or both are stationary, nothing is gained.
    God is permanent, the individual moves.

  • Tailor - cuts a single piece into many pieces, then stiches them all together to get a beautiful shirt.
    Mind == scissors - desires
    Buddhi == needle.

  • Matam - that which comes from mind.
    Religion tells you the way to refinement.
    Ocean water - anywhere is salty. Similarly, religions are the same everywhere.

  • Fundamental discrimination vs
    Individual discrimination.

  • Discrimination gives Determination, leads to Unity
    Though a single thread breaks easily, a handkerchief made of threads is strong.
    Unity is strength.

  • Why Shraaddha? Duty - to show gratitude to parents or guru. Was dependent on them, they helped to reach this state. But now, instead of thinking of those who helped, people think of how (much) to spend, whom to call (for the function), etc. Sitting in a corner and thinking (remembering) is better. If our food is what feeds father, he will die of starvation as we feed him only once a year (during the shraaddha)! Therefore, no use of all this show.
    Swami is doing this, goes to (Eswaramma) Samadhi on Birthdays - as an example.

  • Liquor seller, devotee of Ramanuja, asked him, "What can I do for you?". "Give me what you have". He gave liquor, and Ramanuja drank that. Disciples drank in a different way. For Guru, it was given with devotion. To convince the disciples, next, Ramanuja drank molten metal from blacksmith. Disciples had used individual discrimination, so they fled!
