Inauguration of the Sai Nandana garden mentioned in the previous post. 17 Sep 1992 according to this page.
Moral class 1st years' program "Alaap" – songs, speeches, mimicry, mono-act. Except one speech, all other programs were good. Went to Comp lab VT100 inauguration - Indrajith (MTech CS student, who was well versed in UNIX) with us - logged on as guest. Sikka Sir & 1-25V power supplies 4th hr & after tea LM voltage regulators. Making holes in iron boxes & fixing - till 6 o'clock (bhajans). Prof. came & told me, "Only one slot from your class" & "If you want to do research, better not try for MTech - waste of 3 semesters."
The background behind the last sentence is that MTech in Optics was being paused for the next year due to lack of faculty, and MTech Computer Science (CS) being run by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science had been railroaded into allowing MSc (Physics) students also to apply for MTech CS for the next year (and actually for the year after that also) to which they had agreed to admit one student from Physics per year. Since I was interested in continuing here, the straightforward avenue seemed to be to do PhD and then get absorbed as faculty in Physics department as there was a shortage of faculty there. Hence, this inside info from Prof, as probably he was also interested in getting me there as faculty. This conversation might have contributed to my later decision to "wait" for Swami's instructions after MSc instead of applying for MTech. What happened after that is another story.
