1996-12-26 - Thursday - PG elocution, then while trying scrolling in mouse program (failed), heard that tomorrow onwards classes are suspended (for Sports Meet practice.) So, afternoon, shifted up whole (PA) system from foyer & auditorium with the help of 1st year (Maths) boys. Sainath Sir gave tools, multimeter, to keep under lock for IInd PG. Mandir - wrote this, evening library, 8 to 9:30 pm with Shailesh Sir in his car, listening to carols (of yesterday) (quite happy).
1996-12-27 - Friday - Morning till evening, read RD condensed books "Call me Lucky" Bing Crosby's autobiography, "Sharks and the little fish" of a German U-boat, "The three faces of Eve" of a split personality. After bhajans, listened to R. Anand & Komanna, then library (Biggles the Boy), finally 9 o'clock Ashwin's (brother's) 'The Complete Car' magazine till 10.40. Controller came (yesterday to talk to I UG) to talk to II UG 8:30 to 9:30. Bombshell - CBZ (students who had opted for Chemistry, Biology and Zoology) can't take Chemistry major!
Marchpast practice (daily) begins - 8:30 to 9:30 am.
1996-12-28 - Saturday - After marchpast till evening 2:45 pm, soldering BNC cables, brought Motwane type UNIVERSAL AVOMETER into action (only loose contacts). Night 1001 (by chits). Violent swings of mood from evening on, possibly due to RD instead of diary at 6:30 (eating half papaya and Chul's muruku, forgot diary). (Explanations - Chits - meaning I wrote out some chits and chose one at random to choose what to read, and the 1001 paper was what came up. Chul - a student called Sathyanarayana had been nicknamed Chul in the Hostel - around 5 years before? - and from then on, anyone called Sathyanarayana had the default nickname Chul.)
1996-12-29 - Sunday - Morning no marchpast, so lab after Bhajan. Rifled through the cupboard under S4's table in Nuclear Physics room. Found many items of interest, made a list. How about making an inventory in Optics lab too? Afternoon, slept while waiting for Barber. 2:30 "haricut", bath with stored (cold) water as water wasn't coming at 1:30 in the bathroom taps. Spent study hours reading Srinivas' GET application into C-DAC (makers of PARAM, 2 Gflops as of now), ate papaya piece (v. sweet) with milk.
1996-12-30 - Monday - 8 to 9:45 (waiting for You in ground) spent in general nonsense with Badri etc. Then soldering, afternoon scholarship renewal application. Evening went to SSSIHMS from FC stop of hospital bus, with Srinivas and Prashant Somayya (who would stay overnight) to meet Vishwanath Sir. Found him in reasonably good spirits, the mainspring of the conversation. His Akka was mixing food for him to eat - can turn on bed now. Prof was launching tirade after tirade against Sports Meet... Returned in van at 7:30 pm. Slept at 10.
1996-12-31 - Tuesday - Morning made cables, afternoon labelled potentiometer boxes, 5:30 to 7:30 finished 6 BNC-crocodile clip cables as Sainath Sir wanted. Study hours read J-techniques. S4, MS & KS were all fixing their respective computers - former hard disks, latter RAM - 16 MB! - a man was installing in the non-linear optics lab machine. Prof also wants to upgrade the linear lab 386 to 486.
