1996-09-08 - Sunday - Morning instead of writing record, read Chinmaya’s parables, Nakahara, etc. darshan time. Rest of the time in lab, of course. Finally −10 to +10 working (Vref / 2 is 2.5), but can't interface to computer as its monitor is dead! So, cleaning up, sorting components.
1996-09-09 - Monday - Since the 286’s monitor is on the blink, hardware project is on hold. So, arranged capacitors in the evening. (Morning overslept). Fabry Perot - must adjust exactly for mode spacing - big pain. Wrote a little optics record, punched holes in paper for a file for remaining theory classes…
1996-09-10 - Tuesday - Prof took class with conjunctivitis & dark glasses. Shailesh Sir finished his syllabus, then agreed to take semiconductor lasers. (G V Rao who bunked was caught by S⁴) Fabry Perot aligning - couldn’t achieve though struggled after bhajan also… Study hrs with Vishnu in dining hall - didn’t accomplish much except to tell him one defn. in Topology [Assembly lang couldn’t debug, other doubts couldn't clear].
1996-09-11 - Wednesday - Morning + evening ⇒ resistors sorting done. Now the assorted resistors must be put in the correct boxes. Shailesh Sir finished his assigned syllabus, will take up semicon lasers (extra-curricular) next. Asked S⁴ about "Computers in Phy III" for next semester instead of "Energy Resources" (Prof was asking if we wanted QFT or cosmology, others didn’t want). Conjunctivitis epidemic in full swing. Aitchison & Hey study hrs…
NO DISCOURSE - You told Prof. Anil Kumar, 2 days off - so sat in 2nd row on portico! Chances galore. (Chances - meaning chance of proximity to You. Unfortunately, I've not written the details of what exactly transpired in this diary).
1996-09-12 - Thursday - Morning saw memory chip number of the 386 which HIMEM test was finding fault. Tried to write mat file for AOM data error analysis. Afternoon got Fabry Perot fringes with KVA’s expertise. Moving the detectors made all the difference. Aitchison & Hey, collected jack etc to solder Naren Sir's mic (extension).
1996-09-13 - Friday - After Vishwanath Sir’s 2 hrs, tried for printout. Afternoon NS's QM seminar, S⁴'s "seminar" on Molecular Dynamical Models. After bhajan, Matlab all the way till 10 o'clock. Found min. of sin fit, printouts. fmins was problematic, so my own algorithm. Did a little even after Vishwanath Sir left, as Maths boys' practice was on (it went on till 1!) which was for tomorrow’s moral class, shifted from THU.
1996-09-14 - Saturday - Whole day Matlab. Plots of FFT (signal analyser) find the min which fmins should find… Moral class (PA system was) handled by Balaji D - general (audio volume) level was low - or is it like that every day? (First day I’m sitting in the audience). 50 Hz pickup from the "extension" joint - so, must directly connect. Prakash, II M.Tech, wanted to A/D convert some music. Gave him idea of digitizing oscilloscope. Morning eye irritation - hair or conjunctivitis? By mid-morn, OK.
1996-09-15 - Sunday - Afternoon checked discourse cassettes from college (store room) taking B.K.’s headphones. After bhajan, TASCAM & TZA shifted from green room to Mandir (Naren Sir gave key) for tomorrow's (Ganesh Chaturthi) music prog. Music boys got a mundu (meaning not very good) speaker - hardly 30W. So told Shailesh Sir (at 10:20) it would be advisable to get one more & don’t mention my name.
1996-09-16 - Monday - Ganesh Chaturthi - After morning program (in Mandir) waiting in the Hostel for message from Mandir, ~10 am message - finish off puja (that is, You were not coming to Hostel). So done, lunch 11.15, slept. While waiting, cleaned up cupboard a little, washed. Night, told S⁴ about taking Prof's monitor & working in the morning, so went to lab & fixed up the circuit (ADC) for testing tomorrow morning, till 10.30.
