2023-08-18 - Reflections on life achievements

This post is prompted by some reflections I had after viewing this youtube video about Indians from 1967 and where they are now. There are quite a few people who judge other people, their statements, their actions and so on, either to praise them or otherwise. Some of my thoughts, in no particular order.

  • As I've mentioned before in this blog, one of the big lessons I've got to learn in this lifetime is "Judge Not". There are so many reasons for the actions which people do - all we are supposed to do is to unconditionally "Love All, Serve All".
  • It may not be possible for us to do this all the time, due to our limitations, societal norms, and other constraints due to our current state of body-identification. But at least mentally, we can strive to "Love All, Serve All".
  • As You would tell us, "You are not one, but three. The one you think you are, the body; the one others think you are, the mind; the one you really are, the Spirit (Atma)." We can see this in action when we hear others' opinions of ourselves, our actions, our "achievements in life" etc, in which our perceptions may differ widely from others' perceptions. I've experienced this a lot with my Aunt and Uncle, among others.
  • As You have told us, "You are born so as not to be born again". So, the real achievements are not what we physically do on Earth, but what we have done inside to move further to the goal of "not to be born again". In simple terms, that would indicate the inner cleansing one undergoes as the result of life experiences, or simply put, how closer you are to adhering to Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Non-violence all the time. And this would be manifested in how you deal with day-to-day events, how much you are able to transact lovingly with all you come across.
  • Often, what one does in the physical world may not correlate with one's achievements in the inner realm - for example, my mother seems to be progressing very well on the inside, while on the outside she does not seem to be "achieving" much.
  • I believe that the experiences one comes across in life, each one of them, teaches us some lesson or the other. If the lesson is learnt, the experience need not be repeated. Otherwise, we would come across similar experiences until the lesson is driven home. Once we accept this as a learning trajectory and not consider it a burden, it becomes easier to learn, and easier to "overcome" or get past various experiences, some of which may be unpleasant.
